OtherTech: Shielding

Among the most useful of technologies synthesized from OtherTech, aside from quantum computers and cold fusion, was shielding technology.

Previously, long-term space habitation was made largely impossible due to the overwhelmingly hostile environment posed by space itself. Cosmic radiation, in particular, would reduce most living things to atrophied, cancer-ridden goo over the course of decades.

With shield technology, large habitats can operate indefinitely so long as they are powered and fueled.
There is also the side-benefit of high cosmic winds creating an aurora effect. This is best viewed through windows on the habitation deck, preferably with a mug of cocoa.

(While prototypes of habitats suggested the possibility of flooding the stations with radiation-resistant gel (similar to those used in Monkeysuits and WorcMecs) the psychological toll of 24/7 oxygen support and being suspended in a Jell-O-Like substance was deemed too high.)
